Marusei Butter Sandwich
Created in 1977 by Rokkatei, the Tokachi-region confectionery dynasty, Marusei Butter Sandwich is a buttery biscuit sandwich filled with white chocolate cream, raisins soaked in rum, and rich Hokkaido butter. The retro packaging is a homage to Marusei Butter, Hokkaido’s first domestically produced butter from 1905, and even the current wrapper still uses that vintage label design. Otaru Canal

Shiretoko Peninsula
Designated a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 2005, Shiretoko Peninsula is one of the last truly wild corners of Japan — a rugged land of primeval forests, sheer sea cliffs, drifting ice, brown bears, and Steller’s sea eagles. Hakodate Night View
Long celebrated as one of the world’s top three night views alongside Hong Kong and Naples, Hakodate’s panorama from atop 334-meter Mount Hakodate is unforgettable. The city’s narrow isthmus shape — squeezed between Hakodate Bay and Tsugaru Strait — creates a glowing hourglass of lights that looks almost imaginary from above. Take the Hakodate Ropeway from Motomachi (a 3-minute ride that climbs 278 meters) and aim to arrive 30 minutes before sunset to watch the city transform from dusk to dazzling.
