“Bara-maki” (literally “scatter”) souvenirs are the boxes of individually wrapped sweets that Japanese travelers hand out one by one to a whole office, class or team. This is our ranking of the ten we’d actually buy for that job — and unlike most lists, every item here is something we bought with our own money and ate ourselves. The photos are ours (look for the 📸 badge on the prefecture pages), the prices and keep-by dates are from the product pages we checked, and the verdicts are honest.
Individually wrapped (or easy to share from the bag) ・ keeps at least two weeks at room temperature ・ light and hard to crush ・ ideally under about ¥150 a piece ・ and we have to have liked it. Because we only rank things we bought and ate ourselves, some prefectures appear more than once.

1. Unagi Pie — Shizuoka /

Why it’s #1: the textbook bara-maki. Shunkado’s long, slender butter pies (born 1961) come individually wrapped, 12 to a box from ¥1,155 — about ¥96 each — and keep 60 days. Eel powder is in the ingredients, but you taste butter and sugar, not eel. Each pie is big enough that one feels like a proper treat. Buy it at Hamamatsu or Shizuoka Station. Full Shizuoka guide →
Our bite: a buttery aroma the moment you open the wrapper, a surprisingly firm crunch for how thin it is, and sugar on top as the accent. Sweet, but the finish is light — hand kept reaching for a second.
2. Jaga Pokkuru — Hokkaido /

Why it’s here: Calbee’s potato sticks, made from 100% Hokkaido potatoes, are sold as a box of small bags — 6 bags from ¥752, about ¥125 a bag — so each colleague gets a sealed bag, not a loose piece. Keeps up to 5 months and weighs almost nothing. Easiest to find at New Chitose Airport (Calbee+) and Sapporo Station. Full Hokkaido guide →
Our bite: you expect “crisp” and get “crisp, then fluffy” — a real potato inside. One stick and the hand doesn’t stop. Also stocked at Hokkaido antenna shops in big cities.
3. Shitogi Mamegaki — Akita /

Why it’s here: the cheapest individually wrapped piece on this list. Ichinoho’s black-soybean rice crackers run 20 for ¥918 — about ¥46 each — and keep 60 days. If you want the talking point, the round red Namahage Box (14 pieces, ¥1,296) wears the face of Akita’s masked New Year’s Eve visitors; one look and everyone knows where you’ve been. Sold at Akita Station (Topico, 2F) and Akita Airport. Full Akita guide →
Our bite: a gentle hint of salt and a light crunch — we reached for a second before we knew it. Light to carry, compact box, long shelf life: everything a bara-maki needs. Honestly, we bought it for ourselves.
4. Momiji Manju — Hiroshima /

Why it’s here: maple-leaf-shaped sponge cakes with sweet bean paste, individually wrapped, from ¥150 a piece — the souvenir of Miyajima since 1906. The one catch: they keep about 14 days, so buy them at the end of your trip (Miyajima or Hiroshima Station). Full Hiroshima guide →
Our bite: the classic smooth bean paste is as creamy as it looks. Warm one in a toaster and the outside goes crisp while the filling melts a little — our favorite way. Custard and chocolate versions exist too.
5. Beni Imo Tart — Okinawa /

Why it’s here: Okinawa’s most recognizable sweet — a tart shell filled with vivid purple sweet-potato paste, individually wrapped, from ¥216 a piece, keeps 30 days. It runs above our ¥150 guideline, but it is the Okinawa souvenir, so it stays. Available at Naha Airport and practically everywhere on the island. One caution for bara-maki: the shell is delicate, so keep the box flat. Full Okinawa guide →
Our bite: the paste is piped so its edge looks like a flower. Crisp from the toaster, or chilled in summer for a dense, “hokkuri” sweet-potato texture — both work.
6. Yukari — Aichi /

Why it’s here: the “dressy” bara-maki. Bankaku’s shrimp crackers (since 1889, roughly 70% shrimp) are individually wrapped, 8 for ¥691 — about ¥86 each — and keep about 60 days. In Nagoya this is the box people give when it has to look proper, so it works for a boss as well as a team. Sold at JR Nagoya Station, Chubu Centrair Airport and department-store basements. Full Aichi guide →
Our bite (from an Aichi-born editor): the shrimp aroma hits the moment you open the wrapper. Firm but thin, so it snaps cleanly by hand — and the shrimp flavor gets stronger the more you chew.
7. Ika-ten Setouchi Lemon — Hiroshima /

Why it’s here: the savory option. Thin squid tempura crackers with Setouchi lemon from Maruka Foods of Onomichi — over 30 million bags sold. Small bags from ¥150 hold 9–10 pieces, keep about 4 months, and are the right size to hand to one person. Hiroshima Station, the airport and souvenir shops all carry it. Full Hiroshima guide →
Our bite: first piece — “whoa, that’s lemon!” — then the squid umami follows. Works as a beer snack or an everyday nibble, and the bag is a finish-in-one-go size.
8. Pocky — Osaka /

Why it’s here: the emergency bara-maki. Glico is an Osaka company, standard boxes start around ¥300 at any convenience store, and they keep up to 180 days. The Osaka- and region-limited boxes (¥350–1,500, 6–24 sticks) are sold at JR Osaka Station, Kansai International Airport and Glico’s flagship shop in Dotonbori. Full Osaka guide →
Our bite: reliably good, and the inner packs are small — good for sharing. We’re also fairly sure they used to be thicker (laughs).
9. Ebi Senbei no Sato — Aichi /

Why it’s here (with an asterisk): not individually wrapped — but a ¥600–900 zip bag holds a small mountain of mixed shrimp crackers that keep up to 90 days, which makes it the best “put it on the shared table” souvenir we know. Locals treat it as the casual counterpart to Yukari: Yukari for gifts, this for the break room. The bags are also sold at JR Nagoya Station and Chubu Centrair Airport; the main shop in Mihama on the Chita Peninsula has around 40 kinds, most of them free to sample. Full Aichi guide →
Our bite (from an Aichi-born editor): the assorted bag is a lucky dip of shapes and flavors — great value. Start eating and you don’t stop (laughs).
10. Iwa-okoshi — Osaka /

Why it’s here: the old-school pick. Puffed-rice brittle with ginger, an Edo-era Osaka sweet (Amidaike Daikoku dates to 1805), individually wrapped, from ¥540 and good for up to 90 days. Namba and Shinsekai souvenir shops stock it. Full Osaka guide →
Our bite: light the moment you pick it up, and compact — easy to carry and easy to hand out in quantity. It looks rock-hard but isn’t; the ginger hits on the first bite, and we were on our second before we noticed.
Good — but only for short trips /
- Nama-yatsuhashi (Kyoto) — soft cinnamon-dusted rice dough around sweet bean paste, from ¥648 for 10, and 6 flavors in 4-piece bags. The kids in our house voted for chocolate-banana, ramune and mango. But it keeps about 10 days, so it’s for trips of a week or less.
- Matsushima Kouren (Miyagi) — paper-thin rice crackers from ¥216 for a 2-piece pack, additive-free with no official keep-by figure — so buy them on your last day. Lovely, but not a long-haul candidate.
Honourable mention /
- Niigata arare & okaki — ¥400–1,000 zip bags that keep several months; share from the bag like #9. It missed the ten only because it is a category rather than one product — Niigata makes about 60% of Japan’s rice crackers, so any local maker is a safe pick.
Three rules of thumb / 3
- Count pieces, not boxes. A ¥1,155 box of 12 covers twelve people; a ¥1,728 box of 10 Ajari-mochi (Kyoto) covers ten. The cheap-looking box is often the generous one.
- Buy the short-lived ones last. Momiji manju (14 days) and yatsuhashi (10 days) go in the bag on the final day; Pocky and Jaga Pokkuru can be bought on day one. Our shelf-life guide has the full list.
- Keep boxes flat in checked luggage. Tarts and manju survive a flight fine if they’re not stood on end; sturdier snacks like Jaga Pokkuru, Ika-ten and Pocky don’t care. And all of these are baked or dry goods, which are the easy category at customs — see our customs guide for your country.
