Awamori

Shuri Castle
Shuri Castle was the seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom (1429-1879), one of Asia’s most fascinating maritime kingdoms that ruled over Okinawa and parts of Taiwan as an independent nation for 450 years. The castle’s vivid red-and-gold design — completely distinct from mainland Japanese castle architecture and reflecting strong Chinese influence — represents Okinawan culture at its most distinctive. The original castle was destroyed in WWII and meticulously reconstructed in 1992; tragically, a fire destroyed the main hall again in October 2019. Reconstruction is underway (with completion expected by 2026), but visitors can still explore the surrounding stone-paved fortification walls, the seven UNESCO World Heritage gusuku (castle) sites, and the on-site exhibits. Tickets ¥600. From Naha Airport, take Yui-Rail monorail to Shuri (about 35 minutes). Plan 2-3 hours.

Churaumi Aquarium
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is one of the world’s largest and most beautiful aquariums — its centerpiece is the massive 7,500-cubic-meter “Kuroshio Sea Tank,” the world’s second-largest aquarium tank, which hosts whale sharks, manta rays, and over 70 species of fish in a stunning underwater spectacle. The tank’s 60-meter long acrylic viewing wall and 8-meter-tall ceiling create a sense of being underwater alongside the marine life. Beyond the main tank, the aquarium features the Ocean Discovery Pool (touch tanks), the Coral Reef tanks, the Fluorescent Coral Display, and an extensive deep-sea exhibition. The aquarium is part of the Ocean Expo Park, which also includes the Okinawa Memorial Tropical Botanical Garden and the rare Manatee Pool (one of only two in Japan). Tickets ¥2,180. Kokusai-dori (International St.)
Kokusai-dori (“International Street”) is Okinawa’s most vibrant shopping and entertainment district — a 1.6-kilometer thoroughfare in central Naha that earned its name during the post-WWII US occupation when American servicemen filled the district. Today, the street is lined with 600+ shops, restaurants, bars, and traditional craft boutiques specializing in Okinawan products: Ryukyuan pottery, traditional textiles, Okinawan glasswork, awamori shops, and the famous Don Quijote (open 24 hours). Beyond shopping, the district features live Okinawan music performances at various restaurants, traditional Eisa drum performances on weekends, and exceptional Okinawan cuisine ranging from cheap-and-cheerful to fine dining. The street is most lively from afternoon through midnight. From Naha Airport, take Yui-Rail to Kenchomae or Asato (about 25 minutes). Free to wander; most shops have small entrance fees.

Kerama Islands
The Kerama Islands are a stunning archipelago of 22 small islands and over 30 islets in the East China Sea, just 40 kilometers west of Naha. The islands are designated a National Park (the only Okinawan national park) and offer some of Asia’s most pristine coral reefs, white-sand beaches with shockingly clear turquoise water (visibility often exceeds 50 meters), and dramatic limestone formations. The signature islands are Tokashiki (with the photogenic Aharen Beach), Zamami (where humpback whales gather January-March, providing exceptional whale-watching opportunities), and Akajima (with rare native Ryukyu deer). Diving and snorkeling here are world-class — the Keramas regularly appear in dive guides as among the world’s top destinations. From Naha’s Tomari Port, ferries to Tokashiki take 35 minutes (¥2,490) or 70 minutes (¥1,650 slow ferry).

Cape Manzamo
Cape Manzamo is one of Okinawa’s most scenic natural landmarks — a dramatic 20-meter limestone cliff that juts into the East China Sea on the Onna coast, named (“Place for 10,000”) by King Sho Kei of Ryukyu, who reportedly said “this place can hold 10,000 people” when he visited in the 18th century. The cape’s signature feature is its perfectly elephant-trunk-shaped silhouette when viewed from a specific angle — making it one of Okinawa’s most photographed natural formations. Surrounding the cape, beautifully maintained walking paths offer panoramic ocean views, with the Onna coastline curving away into the distance. Is Okinawa very different from mainland Japan?
Dramatically so. Okinawa has its own language (Uchinaaguchi), distinct cuisine, unique architecture, and a history as an independent kingdom until 1879. Many visitors find Okinawa feels more like Southeast Asia than Japan — the tropical climate, the coral reefs, and the relaxed pace of life are all very different from Tokyo or Kyoto.

When should I avoid Okinawa?
Typhoon season (July–September) brings significant storms, and the hottest summer months can be exhausting. The ideal windows are late April–June (warm, clear, pre-typhoon) and October–November (warm, calm, less crowded). Golden Week (late April–early May) is extremely busy.

Do I need a car in Okinawa?
For Naha and the main tourist sights, the Yui Rail monorail and buses are sufficient. But to explore the north (Churaumi, Cape Manzamo) and the surrounding islands freely, renting a car is strongly recommended. International driving licences are accepted.
那覇・首里城などはゆいレールとバスで足ります。ただし美ら海水族館・万座毛など北部を自由に観光するにはレンタカーが断然便利です。国際免許証が使用可能です。
💡 Pro Tip: Book ferries to Kerama Islands early — they sell out fast in summer. The morning departure (9am) gives you a full day of snorkelling and still gets you back to Naha by evening.
