Okinawa defies easy categorisation. It was the independent Ryukyu Kingdom until 1879, and that distinct cultural identity — visible in its red-tiled rooftops, shisa lion-dog guardian statues, sanshin music, and karate tradition — runs through every aspect of life here. The cuisine is equally unique: goya champuru (bitter melon stir-fry), rafute (melt-in-your-mouth braised pork belly), and Okinawa soba bear no resemblance to mainland Japanese food. Awamori
Okinawa’s indigenous distilled spirit — made from Thai indica rice using a unique black koji mould, then aged in clay pots for up to decades. The older the awamori (called ‘kuusu’), the smoother and more complex the flavour. Beautifully bottled aged awamori makes one of the most distinctive Japanese gift options.

Okinawa Soba (dry pack)
Not related to buckwheat soba at all — Okinawa soba is a thick, flat wheat noodle served in a clear pork-and-bonito broth, topped with braised pork belly (sanmainiku), kamaboko, and pickled ginger. Dry noodle and soup-pack sets make an excellent souvenir to recreate the taste of Okinawa at home.

Shuri Castle
The restored palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom — a vivid red-lacquered complex perched above Naha, blending Japanese, Chinese, and Southeast Asian architectural styles into something wholly unique. Partially damaged by fire in 2019, restoration is ongoing but the main structures and grounds remain open and deeply atmospheric.

Churaumi Aquarium

The Kuroshio Sea tank, with its floor-to-ceiling acrylic panels, creates an otherworldly blue experience. Set within the Ocean Expo Park in northern Okinawa.

Kerama Islands
A short 35-minute ferry from Naha lies an archipelago of sublime beauty — star-sand beaches, ‘Kerama Blue’ visibility-perfect waters, and some of Japan’s finest coral reef snorkelling and diving. Zamami and Tokashiki are the main islands. Humpback whales pass through in winter (January–March).

Cape Manzamo

The iconic elephant-trunk-shaped rock formation juts into the East China Sea, and the surrounding wildflower meadow is beautiful at sunset. A 5-minute walk around the perimeter path takes in all the best views.

Is Okinawa very different from mainland Japan?
Dramatically so. Okinawa has its own language (Uchinaaguchi), distinct cuisine, unique architecture, and a history as an independent kingdom until 1879. Many visitors find Okinawa feels more like Southeast Asia than Japan — the tropical climate, the coral reefs, and the relaxed pace of life are all very different from Tokyo or Kyoto.

When should I avoid Okinawa?
Typhoon season (July–September) brings significant storms, and the hottest summer months can be exhausting. The ideal windows are late April–June (warm, clear, pre-typhoon) and October–November (warm, calm, less crowded). Golden Week (late April–early May) is extremely busy.

Do I need a car in Okinawa?
For Naha and the main tourist sights, the Yui Rail monorail and buses are sufficient. But to explore the north (Churaumi, Cape Manzamo) and the surrounding islands freely, renting a car is strongly recommended. International driving licences are accepted.
