Top Okinawa souvenirs and must-visit travel spots — your complete guide for visitors to Japan. Japan’s southernmost prefecture is a world apart — a sub-tropical archipelago of 160 islands where the water runs every shade of blue, the food is unlike anything else in Japan, and the people carry a philosophy of longevity and contentment called ‘ichariba chōdē’ (once we meet, we’re family). Okinawa’s Ryukyu Kingdom history, distinct dialect, and unique cuisine make every visit feel like a separate country.

Okinawa defies easy categorisation. It was the independent Ryukyu Kingdom until 1879, and that distinct cultural identity — visible in its red-tiled rooftops, shisa lion-dog guardian statues, sanshin music, and karate tradition — runs through every aspect of life here. The cuisine is equally unique: goya champuru (bitter melon stir-fry), rafute (melt-in-your-mouth braised pork belly), and Okinawa soba bear no resemblance to mainland Japanese food. And then there are the beaches — Kerama’s star-sand shores, Ishigaki’s Kabira Bay, Miyako’s Yonaha Maehama — among the finest in all of Asia.

Beni Imo Tart

Beni Imo Tart is Okinawa’s most beloved modern confection — a delicate sweet potato tart where the prefecture’s signature purple sweet potato (beni imo) paste is encased in a buttery shortbread crust and lightly glazed. The vibrant purple color, natural earthy sweetness, and refined buttery texture create a uniquely Okinawan dessert experience. Created in 1986 by Naha-based confectioner Okashi-Goten (“Sweet Palace”), the tart has become Okinawa’s #1 souvenir confection, with over 200 million sold over the decades. The recipe uses only Okinawan beni imo, premium butter, and refined Japanese flour. Top makers include Okashi-Goten and Beni-Imo Original Tart Co. Boxed gift versions in 6, 12, or 24 pieces feature elegant Okinawan island-themed packaging. Best within 30 days unopened. Pair with sanpin tea (Okinawan jasmine tea) or coffee. Available at Naha Airport, JR Naha Station shops, and major Okinawa souvenir stores.

Chinsuko

Chinsuko is Okinawa’s most ancient confection — a small, square shortbread cookie made from premium flour, lard, and sugar, baked to a delicate crisp-and-crumbly texture. The recipe dates back centuries to the Ryukyu Kingdom era (1429-1879), when chinsuko was crafted exclusively for royal weddings, festivals, and special ceremonies. The cookies’ distinctive flavor combines a subtle saltiness from the lard with delicate sweetness, creating a uniquely Okinawan tea companion. Top makers include Naha Ryukyu Sweets (founded 1937) and Chinsuko Honpo. Modern variations include matcha, sea salt, chocolate, and seasonal fruit-flavored versions. Each cookie is individually wrapped in colorful traditional Ryukyuan paper. Boxed gift versions in 12, 24, or 48 pieces are sold at Naha Airport, JR Naha Station shops, and Okinawan souvenir stores. Best within 90 days. Pair with sanpin tea or coffee.

Orion Beer

Orion Beer is Okinawa’s flagship beer — created in 1957 to provide an Okinawan answer to mainland Japanese beer, the brand has become synonymous with the prefecture’s relaxed, tropical lifestyle. The signature Orion Premium Lager features a crisp, slightly sweet character that’s perfect with hot Okinawan weather and the prefecture’s bold cuisine. The beer’s distinctive blue label with the rising sun-and-orion-stars logo is instantly recognizable across Asia. Beyond the original lager, Orion produces seasonal craft beers, the popular Orion Citrus (with Okinawan shikuwasa lime), and the rare Orion Stout. The brewery in Nago offers free tours and tastings. Pair Orion with Okinawan sushi, taco rice, or simple grilled fish. Available at Naha Airport, JR Naha Station, and most Okinawa restaurants and convenience stores. Premium gift sets feature multiple varieties in elegant packaging.

Awamori

Awamori is Okinawa’s most prestigious distilled spirit — Japan’s oldest type of indigenous shochu, made exclusively in Okinawa from imported Thai-grown long-grain rice (a unique tradition dating back 600+ years to when Ryukyu Kingdom traders brought back distillation methods from Southeast Asia). The signature Okinawan distilling techniques — using long-grain Thai rice, indigenous black koji mold, and spring water — produce awamori with a uniquely floral, honey-rich character that’s both more complex and more refined than mainland Japanese shochu. Top brands include Kuso (the most traditional), Zaibyaku, Yamanao, and the rare “kusu” (long-aged versions, 3-18 years old, with caramel-amber color). Many distilleries (kuramoto) offer free tours and tasting flights. Pair with goya champuru, taco rice, or Okinawan kuro-buta pork dishes. Available at Naha Airport, JR Naha Station, and Okinawa’s 47 active distilleries.

Okinawa Soba (dry pack)

Okinawa Soba is one of Japan’s most distinctive noodle traditions — completely different from mainland soba, Okinawan noodles are made entirely from wheat flour (no buckwheat at all) and feature a thicker, slightly springy texture similar to udon. The traditional preparation features a clear pork-bone broth with thin slices of stewed pork belly (rafute), kamaboko fish cake, and pickled ginger. The noodles themselves have been crafted in Okinawa since at least the 17th century, evolving as Ryukyuan cuisine absorbed Chinese, Southeast Asian, and Japanese influences. Take-home Okinawa Soba Kits include vacuum-sealed handmade noodles, concentrated pork-bone broth, pre-cooked rafute pork, and instructions. Top brands include Naha Soba Honpo and Okinawan Local Foods. Available at Naha Airport, JR Naha Station, and major Kyushu/Tokyo depachika. Best within 30-60 days unopened. Pair with cold beer or awamori.

Shuri Castle

首里城

Shuri Castle was the seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom (1429-1879), one of Asia’s most fascinating maritime kingdoms that ruled over Okinawa and parts of Taiwan as an independent nation for 450 years. The castle’s vivid red-and-gold design — completely distinct from mainland Japanese castle architecture and reflecting strong Chinese influence — represents Okinawan culture at its most distinctive. The original castle was destroyed in WWII and meticulously reconstructed in 1992; tragically, a fire destroyed the main hall again in October 2019. Reconstruction is underway (with completion expected by 2026), but visitors can still explore the surrounding stone-paved fortification walls, the seven UNESCO World Heritage gusuku (castle) sites, and the on-site exhibits. Tickets ¥600. From Naha Airport, take Yui-Rail monorail to Shuri (about 35 minutes). Plan 2-3 hours.

Churaumi Aquarium

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is one of the world’s largest and most beautiful aquariums — its centerpiece is the massive 7,500-cubic-meter “Kuroshio Sea Tank,” the world’s second-largest aquarium tank, which hosts whale sharks, manta rays, and over 70 species of fish in a stunning underwater spectacle. The tank’s 60-meter long acrylic viewing wall and 8-meter-tall ceiling create a sense of being underwater alongside the marine life. Beyond the main tank, the aquarium features the Ocean Discovery Pool (touch tanks), the Coral Reef tanks, the Fluorescent Coral Display, and an extensive deep-sea exhibition. The aquarium is part of the Ocean Expo Park, which also includes the Okinawa Memorial Tropical Botanical Garden and the rare Manatee Pool (one of only two in Japan). Tickets ¥2,180. From Naha Airport, the aquarium is 90 minutes by Yui-Rail + bus, or rental car (highly recommended).

Kokusai-dori (International St.)

Kokusai-dori (“International Street”) is Okinawa’s most vibrant shopping and entertainment district — a 1.6-kilometer thoroughfare in central Naha that earned its name during the post-WWII US occupation when American servicemen filled the district. Today, the street is lined with 600+ shops, restaurants, bars, and traditional craft boutiques specializing in Okinawan products: Ryukyuan pottery, traditional textiles, Okinawan glasswork, awamori shops, and the famous Don Quijote (open 24 hours). Beyond shopping, the district features live Okinawan music performances at various restaurants, traditional Eisa drum performances on weekends, and exceptional Okinawan cuisine ranging from cheap-and-cheerful to fine dining. The street is most lively from afternoon through midnight. From Naha Airport, take Yui-Rail to Kenchomae or Asato (about 25 minutes). Free to wander; most shops have small entrance fees.

Kerama Islands

The Kerama Islands are a stunning archipelago of 22 small islands and over 30 islets in the East China Sea, just 40 kilometers west of Naha. The islands are designated a National Park (the only Okinawan national park) and offer some of Asia’s most pristine coral reefs, white-sand beaches with shockingly clear turquoise water (visibility often exceeds 50 meters), and dramatic limestone formations. The signature islands are Tokashiki (with the photogenic Aharen Beach), Zamami (where humpback whales gather January-March, providing exceptional whale-watching opportunities), and Akajima (with rare native Ryukyu deer). Diving and snorkeling here are world-class — the Keramas regularly appear in dive guides as among the world’s top destinations. From Naha’s Tomari Port, ferries to Tokashiki take 35 minutes (¥2,490) or 70 minutes (¥1,650 slow ferry).

Cape Manzamo

Cape Manzamo is one of Okinawa’s most scenic natural landmarks — a dramatic 20-meter limestone cliff that juts into the East China Sea on the Onna coast, named (“Place for 10,000”) by King Sho Kei of Ryukyu, who reportedly said “this place can hold 10,000 people” when he visited in the 18th century. The cape’s signature feature is its perfectly elephant-trunk-shaped silhouette when viewed from a specific angle — making it one of Okinawa’s most photographed natural formations. Surrounding the cape, beautifully maintained walking paths offer panoramic ocean views, with the Onna coastline curving away into the distance. Sunset is particularly stunning, and on clear evenings the lights of distant islands glitter offshore. Free admission. The adjacent Manzamo Mall offers Okinawan craft shopping and dining. From Naha Airport, Cape Manzamo is 75 minutes by car or rental car (recommended).

Insider Tips

🌀 Typhoon Season /

August–September has a 30–50% chance of flight cancellation due to typhoons. Buy travel insurance with weather coverage — local hotels are flexible but airlines aren’t.

🏝️ Skip Naha for Outer Islands /

Direct flights to Ishigaki or Miyako are often cheaper than flying to Naha then taking ferry. Check JTA, Solaseed, or Peach for direct routes.

🤿 Snorkel Visibility /

Clearest water is March–May and October–November. Summer typhoons stir up sediment — peak tourist season ≠ peak visibility.

🍶 Real Awamori /

Airport gift-shop Awamori is sweetened for tourists. For real flavor, ask any local izakaya for *kusu* (aged 3+ years) — same price, world apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Okinawa very different from mainland Japan?

Dramatically so. Okinawa has its own language (Uchinaaguchi), distinct cuisine, unique architecture, and a history as an independent kingdom until 1879. Many visitors find Okinawa feels more like Southeast Asia than Japan — the tropical climate, the coral reefs, and the relaxed pace of life are all very different from Tokyo or Kyoto.

When should I avoid Okinawa?

Typhoon season (July–September) brings significant storms, and the hottest summer months can be exhausting. The ideal windows are late April–June (warm, clear, pre-typhoon) and October–November (warm, calm, less crowded). Golden Week (late April–early May) is extremely busy.

Do I need a car in Okinawa?

For Naha and the main tourist sights, the Yui Rail monorail and buses are sufficient. But to explore the north (Churaumi, Cape Manzamo) and the surrounding islands freely, renting a car is strongly recommended. International driving licences are accepted.

💡 Pro Tip: Book ferries to Kerama Islands early — they sell out fast in summer. The morning departure (9am) gives you a full day of snorkelling and still gets you back to Naha by evening.
