Takachiho Gorge

At low tide, this geological wonder is fully exposed — visitors can walk between the ridges on a uniquely Mars-like landscape. The island itself is sacred — Aoshima Shrine has stood here since the 6th century, dedicated to gods of marriage and fertility. Udo Jingu is one of Japan’s most uniquely-located shrines — the entire main shrine sits inside a massive natural cave on the dramatic coast of Miyazaki, with vermilion architecture nestled directly against rugged sea cliffs. The shrine has been worshipped since at least the 6th century and is dedicated to Hikoinhonotsuyu, the legendary parent of Emperor Jimmu (Japan’s first emperor according to mythology). The signature ritual is the unique “Untama Tossing” — visitors throw small clay tokens at a heart-shaped rock seen below in the surrounding sea, and successful aim is said to bring good fortune in love and life. The signature feature is the trio of crater lakes: blue Roku-kan-no-Ike, emerald-green San-mae-no-Ike, and the rare yellow-tinged Ni-mae-no-Ike, all visible from the iconic Ebino-no-Mori observation deck. Above-ground hiking trails connect to multiple peaks (including the smoking active volcano Karakuni-yama) and a network of hot springs hidden in the forest. The annual fall foliage (mid-October) and winter snow scenes are particularly stunning. From JR Yoshimatsu Station, the plateau is 40 minutes by bus. Best from late April through October. Kirishima Onsen
Kirishima Onsen is a 1,300-year-old hot-spring region nestled in the Kirishima mountain range — its mineral-rich waters have welcomed travelers since records began, with Emperor Jimmu (Japan’s mythological founder) reportedly bathing here 2,600 years ago. The region features 13 distinctly-flavored hot springs across multiple villages, each with its own character: sulfur-rich Maruoyama, calcium-bicarbonate Tarumizu, and acidic Kawaii. Beyond bathing, visitors can hike the surrounding mountains, visit Kirishima Shrine (one of Japan’s most spiritually important Shinto sanctuaries), and explore the nearby Kirishima International Music Hall.
