Iwate is Japan’s second-largest prefecture — a vast, unhurried landscape of rice plains, volcanic mountains and rugged coastline. The glory of Hiraizumi shines through the UNESCO World Heritage Chuson-ji Temple, whose Konjiki-do (Golden Hall) is a 900-year-old marvel of gold leaf, lacquer and mother-of-pearl inlay. The Geibikei gorge offers serene flat-boat rides between sheer limestone cliffs. Along the Sanriku coast, a dramatic ria shoreline of sea caves, arches and fishing villages awaits.
