For centuries, Nagasaki was Japan’s only window to the outside world during the Edo period’s national isolation policy. Dutch traders, Chinese merchants, and Portuguese missionaries all left their mark on the city’s architecture, cuisine, and festivals. Today Nagasaki is equally known as one of the two cities struck by atomic bombs in 1945, and its Peace Park and memorial museum stand as profound reminders of the importance of peace.
