Aomori Nebuta Festival
Held every August 2-7, the Aomori Nebuta Festival is one of Tohoku’s three great festivals and an absolute sensory overload. Massive paper-mâché floats — up to 9 meters wide and 5 meters tall, depicting fierce warriors and mythological scenes — are paraded through downtown streets, lit from within and accompanied by thunderous drum rhythms and chants of “Rassera! Rassera!” Visitors are encouraged to don a haneto costume and dance alongside the floats; costumes can be rented from city shops for around ¥4,000. Lake Towada
